Pre-dinosaur native of New Zealand hatched in England’s Chester Zoo.

The Aukland Zoo in New Zealand breeds tuatara closer to their native habitat.

Tuataras bury their eggs, which then remain buried for about a year. The temperature of the soil determines whether the eggs will hatch as males or females. Biologists can therefore make sure that the optimum number of each sex is preserved and released into the wild, on the now predator-free wildlife preserve on Cuvier Island.
